Simple Healthy Meal Plan

Now that I am starting to earn an income, I really want to get back to better meals for our children by stating with a simple healthy meal plan.  I do not know that I can go as far as to shop entirely organic again but I am definitely going to try my best.  I also think I will try to stick with just some simple easy recipes that are healthy but not too elaborate.  This site Wisked Foodie seems to have some nice options for recipes.  I like that they have categories for healthy and kids.  I also plan to start meal planning again – not only was that extremely helpful but I felt that I cooked more healthy meals that way too.

Meal Planning

I feel like over the past year I have not been cooking or feeding my family nearly as healthy as I used to.  It is really rather frustrating, and I want nothing more then to get back into cooking the healthy meals I once cooked on a daily basis.  Things have changed so much over the years.

When I worked full-time I shopped exclusively at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.  I meal-planned for the week and did all of my cooking through Cook’s Illustrated or Cook’s Country Cook Books.  Everything I bought was organic.

Since that time, I am a no longer employed full-time and added twin to the mix.  For a long time money has been more than just tight.  So, I cut corners.  I started shopping at stores that did not have the organic selection, but was a lot more cost effective and I stopped using cookbooks that had so many ingredients.  In fact, I stopped using cookbooks altogether.  I started making meals that were just extremely cheap, such as breakfast for dinner, grilled cheese and soup, and hot dogs.  All those things are okay if it is only once in a while, but certainly not on a regular basis.

They only items I have really stuck to buying that are organic are milk, cheese, salad and most meat.  I feel good that at least some of it is still organic, but I hate that I feed anything to my kids that may not be good for them.  I worry about hormones in the foods they eat and will probably never forgive myself if anyone of the starts puberty early.  However, I guess we all do what we have to in order to survive.  At least I always had food on the table for them.
