Preparing To Leave For College

I can tell school is starting up soon, especially college.  The pool we belong to is employed with many high school and college kids.  There are several kids who have already left to head off to college and there are several more who are preparing to leave for college in the next week or so.  It is a rather bittersweet moment.  As proud as I am to see these kids go off and pursue their dreams, I am sad to see them leave.  We have been members of this pool for many years – it is a private pool so we have gotten to know a lot of the families on a personal level.  Plus this year I am on the pool board with the position of swim lessons and tennis lessons.  With that position I have had the opportunity to get to know the kids better then I have in the past.

Dorm Room Preparation

I am not sure how much is in the dorm rooms now for kids when they go away, but for me there was a lot involved in dorm room preparation.  Basically there was a bed, shelves and a desk and nothing else in my dorm room.  I had to supply a desk lamp, a small refrigerator, all my bedding and pillow.  I brought up empty plastic milk crates for storage, pen/pencil holder, desk blotter, planner, and garbage pail.  Not to mention hangers and all my personal care items!  A lot goes into moving into a dorm room, and even more so for those who are sharing apartments.  Though I had some major bumps in the road while living in the dorms, I believe the whole experience was beneficial.  From a social aspect, it allowed me to meet a lot of other students on a more personal level then just in a class and from a personal aspect it really forced me to grow up and learn to live with people I may or may not have particularly liked.

It is so fun hearing the kids talk about going off to college.  The things they need to buy and where they will be living.  I also love seeing all the kids in their college logo merchandise.  I remember how excited I was to get my college t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, etc.  I know of one gal who got some really cute University of Alabama shirts the other day, she is starting school there this fall. Colleges sell such a variety of fashionable clothing now with their namesake on it.  Clothes were pretty boring when I went to school!  I think having clothing from the school you attend shows how proud you are of attending that particular school.

Overall college is such a fun experience, and although you are obviously there to learn it is really the last chapter in that part of your life of being a kid.  You have major responsibilities now with going to school and keeping up with your grades, but you don’t have a “job”.  Once you graduate, life as an adult truly starts. I would say study hard and go to classes, but also take the time to enjoy it…safely!

  1. I think it really depends on the school and the type of housing that determines what’s there. My daughter is a transfer student (leaving in about 3 weeks) and her “dorm” is an on-campus apartment. Hers is a 2 bedroom dorm (4 students) with a bathroom, living room and full kitchen! Other’s are more of the traditional dorms (no living room or full kitchen). Those that aren’t apartment type units are supplied with a microfrig – its a refrigerator, freezer, microwave combination (who knew?) They all are supplied with a bed, desk and closet …….

We have been looking for things in the house for her to take (dishes, towels, office/school supplies) but I’m sure we will still have to pick up things when she gets settled – because we forgot or didn’t think she would want (need) it.

  2. Wow, I didn’t realize dorms could be that nice! Hey, if you let her take more of what you have then it will be less to keep up with in that chore area! Well, at least if she takes all the dishes then you won’t have to worry about doing dishes anymore! lol
