I am a computer geek of sorts. I love being on the computer – I could actually live on it! Okay, so I am a little obsessed! Since I am on the computer so much, and so much of what we do is now done on-line I have felt that it is very important to familiarize my children with the computer as well. Our oldest daughter was already navigating her way around the computer fairly well by the age of four, being introduced to the computer through computer games. The games she was introduced were all very kid-friendly since they were games based on preschool shows she was watching.
Benefits to Gaming
Playing video games, whether it is on the computer, handheld device or on a game system has had some bad press. Although I do agree with the research, I do see benefits to it as well. I have witnessed some of the benefits in my children, however I do have strict restrictions on the types of games and the length of time they are allowed.
I have read that playing video games for 20 minutes a day can improve your hand-eye coordination, this is according to a study published in the journal Communication Research. I have seen many improvements in this area in my children. Which I have seen to be especially beneficial in one of my twins.
Video games are fast moving so one wrong move can end the game. This is mainly with action-games since you have make quick decision and even anticipate what is up ahead. Since they have to anticipate what it is going to happen next it also, in effect, teaches consequences. I have seen my daughter play action games that require quick movements where things are falling or trees that character needs to duck under. I am always amazed as how quick her movements are and how good she is at anticipating what is up ahead.
A lot of the games for kids now involve creating your own characters, towns or cities. I enjoy watching them get more and more creative with each game. Initially they would ask me to “build” it because they didn’t know how to make it look good. Now each time they play they get more and more creative in their designs and more sophisticated as well.
Discover Amazing World by Ganz
My children have always enjoyed playing games on one my laptops, which is really nice since they can sit right next to me while I am working and I can supervise their gaming. Recently Megan had a chance to play a new online game called Amazing World. This is a new game by Ganz Studios which is a vibrantly colored 3D virtual world created for ages 6 and above. Players can meet and discover new friends along the way in a controlled environment.
Amazing World is free to play, all you have to do is click on the play button on their website which will turn in to the join button. You will then be directed to the registration form. At this point you will put in the players birthdate and then create a username and password. The game itself will create a “World Name”. Megan’s world name is Tea Sprinkledown! I love that name. :-) The free version allows your child to choose one generic zing, who they will then use during the whole game. Your child will be able to collect prizes by completing missions.
Zings are adorable, lovable and active little creatures who live in Amazing World. Zings can be named and customized.
