Over the years, I have gone through different genres of book that have captivated me. I have read romantic series, fantasy, and historical fiction. However, I always seem to return to my original favorite genre, mystery books.
Mystery Book Series
For the longest time, I was hooked on Patricia Cornwell books. I love her popular character Kay Scarpetta, a Chief Medical Examiner, who is the focus of a book series with it’s 23rd installment being released November 2015. However, when I got to #10 in her series, “Point of Origin” the storyline seemed to deviate from the previous books and the series seemed to be getting stale.
As much as I love the Mystery/Suspense/Thriller books, I noticed I have to watch the storyline. Now that I have kids and a husband who works a lot of nights, I get a little too scared if the storyline is too creepy!
There was something that caught my attention with a Lisa Gardner series when searching Goodreads for a good mystery book series that I could handle. The Tessa Leoni Series consists of three books: “Love You More” (Book 1), “Touch & Go” (Book 2), and “Crash & Burn” (Book 3). Book 3, “Crash & Burn” was just released last month – February 2015.
I have to admit, I have only read “Love You More” in this series. However, I do complete faith in the rating system on Goodreads. When each book in the series has a 4.0 or higher out of 5.0, I would say it’s a pretty good book!
“Love You More” by Lisa Gardner kept me on my toes throughout the entire book. The question of “whodunnit” had so many twists and turns that it kept me guessing until the very end.
Book Synopsis and Review
Tessa Leoni is a tough, self-made women who has fought off alcoholism and dealt with a lot of emotional baggage from when she was growing up. Now, pregnant with Sophie, Tessa Leoni becomes a state trooper, wanting to provide a good home and future for her daughter.
Eventually Trooper Leoni meets Brian, friend of a fellow State Trooper. They fall in love, and he is wonderful and loved by Sophie. After all, Sophie always comes first with Tessa. However, things get a little dicey when Brian is found dead in the middle of her kitchen floor with Tessa looking like she was beaten half to death. It appears to be an open-and-shut case of Tessa being a battered wife who was defending herself against the abuser, her husband. The one problem is that Leoni’s six-year-old daughter, Sophie, is missing, and the trooper’s story is full of holes.
Leoni is arrested for the murder of her husband Brian, but despite being the sole suspect in the case, she plans to find her daughter no matter what, even if it means her own life.
I thought for sure I knew who the murderer was not too long after Leoni’s arrest, but Gardner has an amazing way of keeping the reader on the edge of her seat to the very end. In fact, there were a couple of times I thought I had the mystery solved, only to find out that it was someone I would have never suspected!
If you are looking for a book that completely absorbs you, then “Love You More” is a book you must read! I cannot wait to read the next two books in the series.
For now, I am reading the third and final book in the the Gemma Doyle series by Libba Bray called “The Sweet and Far Thing”. I had read the first two books quite sometime ago, but have always wanted to finish out the series.
I would live to hear what your favorite about your favorite genre of books? Have you read any good books or series lately? I would love to hear about them!
