Binge Worthy Shows Cures The Winter Boredom

This is the time of year when I want to hibernate. We have had subzero temperatures here, which makes me want to stay all snuggled up indoors with some binge worthy shows. Netflix is the perfect remedy for the cold months of winter.

Binge Worthy Shows on Netflix

Binge worthy shows

Are you in the same predicament, finding yourself looking for shows to lose yourself in? Below are four of my recommendations:

White Collar

binge worthy shows

White Collar stars Tim DeKay as FBI Special Agent Peter Burke and the insanely handsome Matt Bomer as Neal Caffrey, an extremely intelligent and multi-talented con artist working as Burke’s criminal informant. After three-years of chasing Caffrey around the globe Burke finally catches up to him and puts Caffrey behind bars for four years. However, with only months left to serve on his prison term, Caffrey escapes prison to find his girlfriend Kate.

Once again, Burke catches up to him, but Caffrey has a deal to offer. Let him serve out the duration of his prison term as an FBI informant in the White Collar Division. Burke agrees and Caffrey is released to him as his handler.

The evolution and dynamics of the relations between Burke and Caffrey is such an integral part of the show and is what makes this show so good. Burke recognizes Caffrey’s instincts and insight are a rare commodity, he truly is a jack of all trades.

I cannot forget to mention some of my other favorites on this show, Caffrey’s trusted friend and co-conspirator with ties to the criminal underworld, Mozzie, also becomes a useful source for Burke and the FBI. As well as Tiffany Thiessen (of Beverly Hills 90210 fame), stars as Burke’s wife.

Dr. Who

This insanely popular BBC series offers 8 seasons on Netflix.

This is a show I watch with my oldest daughter Megan. We really enjoy the adventures Dr. Who encounters while time traveling. Dr. Who is, actually, an extraterrestrial Time Lord. He is rather eccentric while zipping through time and space to solve problems and battle injustice across the universe. He travels via the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space), which is his old and occasionally unreliable spaceship that resembles a blue police phone box.

This show gets a little too intense for my 8-year old twins, but is perfect for Megan. Every few years it seems Dr. Who regenerates and the title role is taken over by another actor.

Another BBC show that is incredibly well made. It is based on the original Sherlock Holmes stories, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson.

If you’ve ever seen Luther, another BBC show, then you are familiar with some of the BBC seasons not always being very long. For Sherlock, ten episodes have been produced. They had a three-part series that aired in 2010, 2012 and 2014, and a special episode aired on January 1, 2016. A fourth series will definitely happen, since it is scheduled to begin filming in April 2016 for an intended 2017 release.

Each episode of Sherlock is longer than the average show, being an hour and thirty minutes each. However, with there only being 10 episodes currently on Netflix, it is a commitment without being completely overwhelming.

Vampire Diaries

I stumbled upon this show, not really thinking I would be drawn in as much as I was. This series began with Elana Gilbert at 17 years of age having lost her parent tragically in a car accident she was involved in. She was the only survivor.

binge worthy shows

She and her 15 year old brother Jeremy are taken in by their Aunt Jenna. She is a great Aunt who adores her niece and nephew, but is somewhat lacking in the parental department. She is just rather overwhelmed, and taking on two high school kids was extremely unexpected.

Elana takes some comfort in her friends but is worried about the path Jeremy is on. He is starting to hook up with the stoners and is now using drugs to hide his pain. However, school starts up again and there is a great new distraction for Elana…a new handsome and mysterious boy, Stefan Salvatore.

From there, the story really evolves. It gets further inside the characters, their past, and other people who are all connected to the reason for Stefan’s return to Mystic Falls. Of course, there is a bit of romance too. 😉

I hope you find these shows as entertaining as I have!

  1. We’re currently watching The 100. We also get Modern Family episodes by disc.
Thanks for the suggestions — I hadn’t heard of White Collar, and added it to my list.
