Cancelled TV Shows Worth Watching On Netflix

This year I’ve discovered a few shows on Netflix I never knew existed. Two of these are cancelled TV Shows, while the third one is in its ninth season.

Cancelled TV Shows On Netflix

Merlin

The first of the cancelled shows is one that I cannot say enough good things about. Merlin was a BBC network series that aired for five seasons, 9/2008 – 12/2012. I’m not sure why, but it seems some of the best shows I’ve seen are from the BBC network.

Merlin is based on the legends of Arthur, but features a younger cast than traditional versions. It was influenced by the U.S. drama Smallville, which features the early years of Superman. The series starts out with Uther Pendragon, Arthur’s father, still at the head of the throne. A young Arthur is being groomed to take over as king when the time comes.

Merlin arrives in Camelot as a young warlock who is sent to live with the court physician Gaius. After arriving in Camelot, Merlin discovers King Uther outlawed magic twenty years ago and imprisoned the last Dragon deep under the kingdom. Upon hearing mysterious voices in his head, Merlin makes his way to the deep cavern under the city and discovers the Great Dragon who informs him of his true destiny – to protect Uther’s son, Arthur. It is believed that Arthur will be the one to return magic to the kingdom and unite it with Albion.

The writing for this show is amazing, as is the cast of which features Bradley James as Colin Morgan as Merlin, Arthur Pendragon, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Guinevere, Richard Wilson as Gaius, Anthony Head as Uther Pendragon, and John Hurt as the voice of The Great Dragon.

The development of the relationship between young Arthur and Merlin is a wonderful feature in this series. It is a show that is enjoyed by both adults and kids. My 12-year-daughter and my 7-year-old daughter enjoyed this series immensely. However, my 7-year-old son thought it was too scary and refrained from viewing it.

There is violence on this series, although the worst of it is suggestive. The “scary” part for my son was the magic. If you do have children and would like to watch this series with them, I would recommend viewing it on your own first.

Witches Of East End

In an effort to find a new show to watch that I could dig my teeth into, I came across the Witches of East End series that originally aired on Lifetime for only two seasons, 2013 & 2014.

Set in the fictional seaside town of East End, it follows the lives of a family of witches, and her two grown-up daughters, as well as as well as her sister. There is a book that this show is loosely based on. However, for those who have read the book, you’ll want to know that in the beginning of this show the two daughters are unaware of their magical powers.

The lead character in this show is the mom, Joanna, played by Julia Ormond. Jenna Dewan Tatum and Rachel Boston play Joanna’s daughters, Freya and Ingrid. Other key cast members include: Eric Winter (Dash Gardiner), Daniel Di Tomasso (Killian Gardiner), and Virginia Madsen (Penelope Gardiner).

Luther

Luther was another BBC Network original, which appeared for three “inconsistent” seasons 2010, 2011, and 2013. This series is a British Crime Series Drama that I would consider dark. Idris Elba plays the lead character, Luther. Who, by the way, was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film for each consecutive season, winning at the 69th Golden Globe Awards. The series also received eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

The premise of this series centers around a dedicated police officer, Luther. He just also happens to be obsessive, possessed, and sometimes dangerous in the violence of his fixations. He is also unable to prevent himself from being consumed by the darkness of the crimes with which he deals. For Luther, the job always comes first. His dedication is a curse and a blessing, both for him and those close to him.

In the first episode of season one Luther is unable to arrest a murder, Alice Morgan. She proceeds to become his confidante throughout the season giving him insight into the motivations of other criminals. The character Alice Morgan continues to make appearances off and on in seasons two and three as well.

There were a couple of announcements made in November of 2014 regarding Luther. First, that there are plans for a special two episodes that will air this Fall (2015). Production for these two episodes occurred just this past Spring. Also announced were the plans to create an American TV series spin-off of Luther. Luther series creator, Neil Cross, would be writing and executive producer of the American series and Elba would be on as Executive Producer.

These are my recommended “Must-See TV” programs that you can watch on Netflix. I have to warn you, all three of them will suck you right in. Be prepared to make some time in your day to be plastered to your TV screen for awhile.

Have you seen any of these series? What are some previous series you would recommend that can be viewed on Netflix?
