Christmas Decoration Tradition

Does your family have a  Christmas decoration tradition?  We have never had a specific holiday tradition per say, but there are certain things we do every year that goes hand-in-hand with Christmas.  We always buy our tree the weekend after Thanksgiving.  Also, since having our own house we always get a live tree.

There are many traditions people follow.  Some make garland out of construction paper with their children, while other make popcorn and cranberry garland. I remember when I was in elementary school making holiday garland with popcorn and cranberries.  I loved bringing my school projects home and sharing them with my mom. Now I have children who love to do the same with my and my husband.

Traditional Popcorn Garlands

  • 3 quarts popped Jolly Time Pop Corn, unsalted and unbuttered
  • 1 quarts whole raw cranberries
  • 1 large spool was dental floss
  • Several large crewel embroidery needles (the points can be rounded for children)

I love creating new traditions with our children.  One tradition I have carried on with my children that was started with my mom was opening one  Christmas present each year on Christmas Eve.  I always looked forward to getting a pair of Christmas pajama’s each year when I was growing up.  Now we do this tradition with our children and they love it!

My oldest daughter Megan already anticipates her Christmas pajama’s.  In fact, a few days ago she said, ” I know you probably already have my new pajama’s for Christmas.  Can’t we open them tonight so we can wear them now?”  Ha, ha … No!  My daughter now shares this tradition with me, by giving me a present on Christmas Eve that contains a pair of Christmas pajama’s.

What are some of the traditions you share with your children?  Have you carried some over from when you were a child, or did you start new one’s of your own?  I would love to here them!

I just like to decorate the tree as a family with Christmas music playing in the background.

My boys are older now but we always decorate the tree together every year. I also get them a new ornament each year to represent what they were “into” that year.
