Decluttering Your House With Three Simple Tips

Whether you work a 9 to 5 job or work from home, decluttering your house does not always fit in so easily to schedules. Either way, you are entitled to taking some vacation time or personal time. Believe it or not, taking some time out from the daily grind is a fantastic way to declutter your life. If you feel you do not have the time to spare during your regular schedule, set aside one weekend out of the month.

Over the past few weeks I have been taking one area at a time to declutter. I have not made the time to go through certain areas of our home for quite sometime, but it was high time I got to it. I seem to be much more tolerante to areas that I do not always see. For instance, our bathroom cabinet. I was annoyed every time I needed something from it, but once the door was shut I did not think about it any more.

I have an after picture, but unfortunately I do not have a before picture. I had not initially set out to clean out this cabinet! I was looking for something specific and could not find it…before I knew it I was taking everything out and throwing a ton away.

Commitment Time

Decluttering your house does take some commitment of time. You will want to let everyone in your family know clearly that you are going to be unavailable during that time you have scheduled to declutter your own and their lives.

If anyone has an aversion to this, simply tell them to let you stick to your commitment or they can chip in and help. More than likely, they will opt to leave you to your task at hand.

Sort It Out

When decluttering your house, it is essential that you do not start out decluttering and end up looking at old photos or worse yet, cleaning. If you are going to declutter your house, you need to discipline yourself to just declutter and not do anything else.

  • Start by sorting out clutter into piles. One pile needs to be for throwing out. The rule of thumb is that if you have not used it or gotten to it in six   months, it is never going to happen and you can toss it out.
  • Next, make a pile for charitable donations – items that are usable but just not for you or your family.
  • Finally make a pile of “maybe some day”. This pile is the one that needs the most attention because it is easy to keep something for future reference and never use it, or to throw something out only to find out the very next day that you needed it. Think carefully before putting too much into this pile and limit the number of items it contains.

File It and Forget It

One of the most important ways to declutter your house is by getting rid of paperwork. You know it is true. Paperwork that is hanging around is the worst form of clutter there is. Make a filing system once and forget about it thereafter.

Go through all your mail, toss what you do not need, and file what you do need. In this way it is out of sight and out of mind. Once you have a filing system put into place, there is no turning back. A good system cannot be beat. Go out and buy some colored folders and fancy labels and go to town. One of my favorite ways to get organized and stay organized is using Franklin Covey Organizational Products. Once everything is in place, all you have to do after that is follow through.

Making the commitment, sorting things out, and creating a filing system are three great ways to declutter your home and your life. I don’t know about you, but I feel so much better about myself and my home when things are organized.

  4. These are great tips! I’m all about trying to stay organized. I agree with the filing system. Paperwork is the worst, especially bills that are years old, lol. I recently tossed and shredded a bunch and now am down to two filing folders and keep my bills in a separate binder so I don’t have to always bring out my filing boxes.

  9. I am the worst offender of letting mail and various paperwork accumulate! I have an accordion binder that only holds so much–its busting at the seams! I too feel so much better when my house is clean. Of course, there’s always one spot in the house that’s a total mess–my husbands work/tool/miscellaneous crap closet lol
