Eight years ago, a little over a year after the birth of Megan, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (auto-immune disease Hashimoto’s) that then lead to Premature Ovarian Failure (POF). Basically this meant that I had gone into early menopause…at the age of 37 years old. To say that news was not only shocking but devastating would be putting it mildly. Our plan to have more children naturally had just been taken away from us.

Fast-forward to today, I have three healthy children. Megan is now 9 years old. Plus we have our twins, Anna and Ethan, who are 5 years old. After a couple of years of trying alternative medicine, and being in denial I finally let go and appreciated what I had. It was then that I opened myself to the possibilities of using donor eggs. Thus that is the way Anna and Ethan came about!

However, my journey with early menopause and Hashimoto’s has had other effects on my body. At 43, I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis in my right hip and Osteopenia in my spine and left hip. My Endocrinologist has me taking Vitamin D3 and Calcium, plus I am to add to that supplement through foods naturally high in those vitamins. I also receive two shots a year, called Prolia. My endocrinologist is also a huge advocate of Pilates and having to exercise your core muscles. The weight bearing aspects of Pilates, along with the focus on alignment, stability, and core strength all come together to build bone and support the structure of the body.

For this reason and more, I was extremely excited to be given the opportunity to review two (2) of Lisa Johnson’s Pilates DVD’s. One of the DVD’s is called Modern Pilates, Pilates Mat Workout and the other is Body Physica Intense, Four High Intensity Workouts. Each of these DVD’s gives you a great workout right in the comfort of your own home.

These two DVD’s provide you with two different types of workout.

Modern Pilates, Pilates Mat Workout: Is the perfect, 55-minute Pilates mat workout. Since there are 3 instructors, including Lisa, videoed during this workout; there are three different levels of instruction throughout the entire DVD. Depending on which instructor you want to follow you can do beginner, intermediate, or advanced. I chose beginner. Despite my endocrinologists urging, I have not made the time to go to the gym regularly for a while now. I thought it best to stick with the beginner version.

I was not disappointed at all with the beginner version of this workout – it is a great workout! Many of the Pilates moves were those I have done at the gym, but this DVD also had some additional moves that I had not tried before. Her instruction is very clear and walks you through on having good technique. The first time I did this DVD I was sore for a couple of days, but in a good way. I knew I had definitely gotten a great workout in my Abs, arms and shoulders. It felt really good! 🙂 I would say if you have never really done Pilates before, or are really new at it then do not push yourself too hard with this workout. It really is a pretty intense workout; so do not feel bad if you have to work your way up to it.

Body Physica Intense, Four High Intensity Workouts:

This DVD is great if you want a quick 10-minute workout or want to do a combination of different 10-minute workouts. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is great for those who want to lose weight. It has actually been found that people who participate in HIIT workouts are more successful at losing weight and burning fat. I love knowing that an intense 10-minutes of working out will burn mega calories!

This DVD there are four different workouts to choose from: Ballet Series, Standing Series, Floor Series, and Sweat Fest. I thoroughly enjoy all four of these workouts, although I am a little partial to the Ballet Series. These workouts really do work your butt off, literally and figuratively. I am pretty much done at the end of two 10-minute workouts.

Lisa Johnson has been a certified personal trainer since 1997, and then became a certified Pilate’s trainer in 1998. In 1999 she opened her Pilates studio, Modern Pilates, in Massachusetts. Lisa definitely knows her stuff having studied in Toronto, Los Angeles, Phoenix, London, Sydney, Australia, and more, working with the top people in the industry such as Moira Stott, Ron Fletcher, and Sarah Christensen.
