My New Work-Out Regiment

I am so excited to have started working out on a regular basis again.  I used to be really good at going to the gym to exercise at least 3 – 4 times a week, but once my oldest daughter was born all exercising came to a screeching halt.  With working full-time, the last thing I wanted to do was bring her to the gym to put her in child care when what she (and I) really needed was some time together.

Now that I’ve been home with the kids, I’ve been really needing to exercise on a regular basis again.  Not only have a put on some weight and have that icky belly “muffin” but I also have osteoporosis and osteopenia.  I am rather young to be experiencing this, but unfortunately it is fall out from going into early menopause at the age of 37 after our oldest daughter was born.  My endocrinologist tells me every time I see him that I should be exercising at least 4 – 5 x’s a week and that Pilates is very important for me to do.

Recently a gym opened right by our house which has child care and couldn’t wait to get over there to join.  My oldest is in school all day and the twins are in pre-school two days a week, plus they are all at a really good age to be able to go hang out in the child care for an hour while I exercise.  So, I joined about 2 1/2 weeks ago and I’ve lost an inch in my waist, a 1/4 inch in my hips and thighs and 1/2 inch in my chest!  I’ve been going 4 days a week to work-out and one day to meet with a personal trainer.

I am not one to go and just do the treadmill, bike or lift weights – I LOVE the classes.  I have my schedule pretty well down with what currently fits in with the family.  I go during the week in the mornings – Zumba, Total Body Makeover, Personal Training, Pilates and Spin.  The nice thing is that if the mornings are going a little crazy and I can’t get there, the classes in the evening are just as good so I can always bring the kids to the child care then.  Evenings just tend to be a little more chaotic with my daughter coming home from school, homework, her activities and then dinner.

I love the gym I’m going to but there is just one thing that does continue to bother me.  When I signed up I was told I needed to make an appointment in the next 24 hours to meet with a personal trainer for an assessment.  I was told it was just take measurements.  When I met with the personal trainer, they did do the initial measurements and then did this body fat test…which put me on the obese scale!  I don’t really know if I believe the validity of this test since I could probably lose about 10 pounds but obese just seems rather drastic.  I’ve heard others who have been told rather far out things too.  So anyway the trainer took me through a pretty intense workout during the assessment and then came the sales pitch to meet with her each week for an 8 week commitment.  Initially it was 3 x’s a week but I told her financially we really cannot afford that so she then made me a “deal” for one time a week.  I did sign up with her, and although she is really good, I really do regret the additional expense.  I did try to get out of it about a week later but they would not release me from the contract.  The other part that concerns me is that I do have osteopenia, osteoporosis, and slight curvature of the spine (scoliosis) – I don’t really know how well they are equipped to take into consideration other “factors”.  I did have lower back pain for several days after our second session…

I do have only 5 more session left, so I will gleam what I can from them and then incorporate some into my workout.  This personal trainer likes working with free weights so I am learning quite a bit from that aspect.  I am very excited to get back in shape not only for myself but for my children.
