Setting Achievable Goals for the New Year

Happy New Year! 

I realize this is the time of year that people start creating their New Year’s resolutions. A new year, a new beginning. However, instead of setting achievable goals, I often feel as though I am setting myself up for failure. It seems to me that creating a broad “I’m going to be at my ideal weight by summer” statement is not a resolution normally attained. I also feel that, since it is New Year’s I have to set a resolution, but I am not always sure if I am truly serious about making the commitment.

Often resolutions that are too broad or all encompassing need to have detailed goals along the way to succeed. For example, giving up a vice such as smoking is something you have to be prepared for mentally, not just because of a date on the calendar. I am more of the belief that if you feel the need to make a major change in your life, do it when you are feeling the drive. If that happens to be in the New Year, that is great. If not, then strike when the fire is hot! You do not need the New Year to make a statement.

Below are some things to keep in mind for setting achievable goals for the New Year.

1. When making a resolution to join a gym and exercise x amount of days per week, make sure the gym you choose is a good fit for you. Often times when people join a gym as a part of a new year’s resolution, they do not follow through because the gym is not what they expected. Before joining a gym, make sure you sit down and write down what your expectations are from a gym. Would crowd level have an effect on you? Does the gym you are considering have the classes you like at the times you want? Don’t forget location, child-care, and shower facilities. Also, do you prefer an outdoor experience to indoor exercise? If so, then maybe a gym is not for you. There are a ton of classes available on-line now. Also, many people do group running in neighborhoods. Maybe there is a friend with the same aspirations who would like to be a running buddy.

2. Be careful with broad based resolutions. I am going to quite smoking, or I am cutting sugar out of my diet types of resolutions are almost impossible to keep. Cutting out a vice is something you need to be prepared for mentally and physically. Instead of cutting out a vice cold turkey, try adding a new healthy behavior to your daily routine. For example, set a goal to add an additional serving of fruit to your day, or set a goal to drink at least cups of water a day. Traditionally, when you add something healthy to your daily routine the bad behaviors start to wean themselves out.

3. Setting too many goals will put you on resolution over-load. With the excitement of the New Year, it is easy to get caught up in the energy and over-commit. Setting multiple goals such as to workout daily, quit smoking, and drop 30 pounds are a bit excessive! Choose one resolution to focus on and break it down into smaller attainable goals.

4. Create palpable resolutions. For instance, want to work date nights into your weekly or monthly routine? You will need to take into consideration what your schedules look like, as well as childcare if you have children. It is really impossible to ever make this an attainable goal for us with my husband’s work schedule and the fact that we have three young children.

5. Accountability helps ensure success. Partner up with a friend or relative who either shares the same goals, or who can help keep you accountable.

Also, your resolution does not have to be set in January. Take time to sit down and really figure out the goals you want to achieve this New Year and attainable ways to be successful.
