I have been working on trying to be more healthy overall and really want to take a holistic approach to being healthy. Over the past few years I have been gaining weight and finding it more and more difficult to take it off. There are several things that I have attributed it to, such as having children, going into menopause at an early age, being more sedentary due to working from home, and just getting older. That being said, I really wanted to get a clear view of where I am falling short.

I have heard for quite sometime now that taking 10,000 steps a day should be your goal. You may wonder why 10,000 steps? This actually came about in 1996 by the U.S. General Surgeon who became increasingly concerned with the rise of obesity in the United States. In general, regardless of age, we are just not getting enough physical activity. They found that the amount of activity needed to manage weight is 10,000 steps a day. This translates into about 5 miles a day. It also recommended that you throw in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day as well.

Take A Holistic Approach To Your Health

I have learned a lot about my overall health wearing the Jawbone UP the past few weeks. By simply wearing the UP and then plugging it into my phone I get a lot of information downloaded into the UP application. For instance, one of the big things I have found out is that I have to be intentional with getting in my steps. If I just go about my day in the usual manner, I average around 3,000 steps a day. This is extremely important information to have since I now know I am only getting in about 30% of my required physical activity a day to just manage weight!

Something else gleamed from the Jawbone UP is very useful information on my sleep. I already know I have to improve my quantity and quality of sleep, but I was not sure by how much. I am normally up late at night and then have to get up early in the morning with the kids. Since sleep can have a direct impact on weight gain that is another department I have to improve.

I have learned a lot about my overall health with the Jawbone UP, and areas that I need to work on.  On average, I am about 75% of the sleep I should be getting. In other words, I am getting only about 6 hours of sleep each night. It also tells you how long you were in Deep Sleep and Light Sleep, as well as how many times you woke up. There are some nights I am woken up 2 – 3 times for kids needing to go potty. The amount of sleep I get directly affects my weight since I am usually too tired to exercise as I should and am eating too many sweets to stay awake.

Other pertinent information you can get from the UP, are details on your Resting Burn, Active Burn and Total Burn. The Total Burn is the number of calories you are burning each day, which then allows you to know how many calories you should be eating each day. If you want to lose weight, it should be less than your Total Burn.

To calculate how many calories you have eaten throughout the day, you can log your food and drink right into the Jawbone UP application. Also, it connects with many other applications that are available, such as MyFitnessPal and RunKeeper to name a couple. I prefer to enter my food through MyFitnessPal and have it download into the UP application from there. I admit I have not been as good as I should with entering in my food information.

I leave the band on all day and all night. Even though it is water resistant, I do not want to take any chances so I take it off when I shower. Also, it has this great Idle Alarm feature that will vibrate on your arm to remind you get up to move around. This has come in very handy for me!

The band itself is extremely sturdy, encased in medical-grade, hypoallergenic rubber. It is smooth, flexible and completely latex-free. I do take it off and on at least twice a day to plug it into my phone. I pull it off of my wrist to take off and then slide it over my hand to put back on.
