Take Control of Your Health with HealthGrades

This Take Control of Your health with Healthgrades pose is on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Healthgrades. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

For quite sometime now I have been an advocate to take control of your health and that of my children. When I was in my twenties, a very long time ago, I used to get Strep Throat on a yearly basis. I went to my doctor and she prescribed an antibiotic for me. After 10 days of taking this medication, I still had not gotten rid of Strep Throat. I was then put on another cycle of antibiotic. Several days later I came down with a rash and went back to my doctor. She they would have to take some blood work to see what the cause was, but very nonchalantly added it could be Scarlet Fever. After a day or two of not hearing any results, I called back to find out the whole office was on vacation and did not have any access to my results. To say I was very upset would be putting it mildly.

While waiting to get my results my mom actually noticed I had lost a lot of weight. I was already on the thin side and then found I had lost 10 pounds. I finally heard back from the office several days later to find that I had tested positive for mononucleosis. Actually, by the time they told me that is what I had tested positive for, I was already over it. I was very upset with the care I received and the irresponsibility of that office and never did return to that doctor. Since that time, I ask a lot of questions and, if there is something that does not sit right with me I move on to another doctor.

Take control of Your Health

Most recently we fell into a situation with my husband when he broke his elbow New Year’s Eve. He required surgery, which then was followed up by a follow up appointment with the doctor a week later and then 6 weeks of physical therapy. During the time my husband was in physical therapy the doctor did not follow him up with again.  However, during this time he was still in intense pain and was dealing with a lot of swelling. As it turns out he developed something called RSD, which happens in 50% of extremity breaks and can cause permanent damage to the joints. What should have only been a 6-week recovery time has turned into more than 6 months. If proper follow-up procedures had occurred then this would have been caught much earlier before so much damage was caused. I think in this whole process my husband has learned that to take control of your health, you have to ask more questions and not make any assumptions.

Luckily there is now a website called Healthgrades. This site allows you to see what type of ratings your current or potential doctor has received. Not only that, but it also allows you to rate your experiences with complete anonymity. I also like that you can look at reports on specific hospitals, that way you can also judge what hospital you would like your doctor to be affiliated with.

I think it is so important, as a mom and a woman, to be an advocate for our own health and that of your family. We are often so busy making sure everyone else is taken care of that we take little time to take care of ourselves. I have had the same primary doctor for several years now, and I have been very pleased with the care I have received from her and her office. I was really excited to see that she and her office were rated 5 out of 5 stars through Healthgrades.

Are you a woman who likes to “know before you go”? The you will want to download and read this Healthgrades report called “Healthgrades 2013 Women’s Health Report: “Lean In” When Making Healthcare Decisions to Get Your Best Outcome“.

Here is one of the many interesting facts you will get from this report regarding how Hospital Quality Varies For Gynecological Surgery.

2009 through 2011, patients treated in hospitals receiving 5 stars for gynecologic surgery have, on average

54.8% lower risk of experiencing complications than if they were treated in hospitals receiving 1 star. From 2009 through 2011, if all hospitals performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5 stars in gynecologic surgery:

27,887 in-hospital complications avoided (women having these types of surgeries could have potentially avoided in-hospital complications)*

I would love to hear from you! Have you ever had a bad experience with a doctor that shaped how you take charge of your health?  Have you used Healthgrades?

What an awesome resource! I’ve found a product called Greens that detoxes daily and has boosted my immune system a ton so our trips to the doctor have greatly decreased, but yesterday I had to find a Chiropractor for the first and it was nerve wrecking to pick one just based on who my insurance covers. I wish I had seen this yesterday!

  2. That’s definitely handy. My husband had an awful experience with a doctor previously and this could have been handy.

  7. I love that I can look up doctors and see actual patient’s experience with them. I will be needing this a lot in a few months as we are moving and we will be looking for new doctors!

I would love to use a site like this for specialists, and dentistry, I am always blind when choosing doctors! A lot of people only visit their doctor when they absolutely have to, and that’s not the best frame of mind to visit a physician!

  9. Wow, do I need this!! I have had such terrible experiences with doctors (although, some good ones as well, admittedly)…and I loathe the idea to seek out a new doctor(s) because what if they’re not any better than the one I have already? It’s so important to have the best doctor for your healthcare, and this is definitely a step in the right direction!

  11. That is good website. Instead of looking for feedback from other patients which may be hard to find, one can turn to the website. The downside is that some people with positive experiences do not normally go online a immediate rate their doctors. Some find it easier to go online and rant about a bad service that rave about a good one.
