The Art of Conversation Compared to a Cup of Black Coffee?

“Good Communication is as stimulating as black coffee and just as hard to sleep after.”

Art of Conversation

Can you remember the last time you had an extremely exciting conversation?  How about a good one?  It seems with the advent of technology, the art of Conversation may be disappearing.  Texting, tweeting and emailing seems to be superseding the valuable experience of human contact.

This seems to be especially true with kids.  I have heard so many kids talk in front of a groups of people this summer who have horrible communication skills.  These are kids who are extremely smart and are currently in college or just starting.  I hate to see kids, especially young kids with their nose in their phone texting.  We need to go back to some good ole fashion face to face conversation.  If nothing else, at least calling over the phone.  Talking on the phone with some kids seems to be such an archaic thing to do.

I know with our daughter she is only 9 right now.  She does have an iPod, but does not have texting.  We give her limited time on her iPod and really do not plan on getting her cell phone for a few years yet.  The only reason why I would consider getting a phone for her even at 12 is if she truly “needs” it.  I have found it an easy way for me to get in touch with some of the kids who babysit for me.  So for that reason I could see it being a benefit for Megan to have one when the time comes.

Hone Your Communication Skills

Do not pass up an opportunity to hone your communication skills.  Pick up the phone and have a great conversation with someone you have not spoken to in a while. You can even call someone out of the blue who you always communicate through texting.  Getting back to having real conversations with people is so important and such a great skill.  Remember, active listening is a critical trait of a strong communicator and grows with practice.  Enjoy your coffee!
